PFC Pedro Alvarez Delgado Memorial Child speaking about event

Students of G.W. Carver Elementary School came together on November 10th 2021, to honor Veterans Day and acknowledge the dedication of The Private Delgado Reading Space, which is funded by the 6.25 Foundation. Named for Private First Class Pedro A Delgado and located within the Carver Library, this space will provide a flexible reading area that encourages and enhances reading.

“We are honored to be selected by the 6.25 Foundation and to dedicate a reading space to Private Delgado in our Library,” states Matthew Buckley, Principal at Carver Elementary School. “This space will give us an opportunity to honor those that served in the Korean War while providing a revitalized space for students to enjoy their reading.”

When the students at Carver Elementary School learned of The Private Delgado Reading Space they were inspired to enhance their knowledge about Veterans Day and the Korean War. At the event, several 3rd grade students volunteered to share what they have learned. Through research and student collaboration, six students presented facts about the Korean War, Private Delgado’s service to his country, and the importance of honoring those who have served.

The Private Delgado Reading Space is named for Private First Class Pedro A Delgado, and funded by the 6.25 Foundation. By providing academic scholarships and funding library projects, the 6.25 Foundation works to honor fallen American Soldiers who fought in the Korean War. PFC Delgado was a Yuma native, born on January 1, 1927.

After enlisting in the United States Army, he bravely fought in the Battle of Chosin Reservoir. On December 1, 1950, PFC Delgado was killed in action. For his service, he received many distinctions, including the Purple Heart.
